A Small Matter of Maintenance

Let’s talk maintenance; the most frequently asked question we receive from clients new to our product range and even for that matter, old clients choosing new products.  In terms of quality of materials and manufacturing disciplines Chambrelan have invested across the board to bring to the market the strongest, most robust range of slides and linear rails.  We know our slides operate in the harshest of environments, across a range of different climates and conditions, but in terms of product selection we believe choosing the right slide from the outset is often the most important consideration a client will make.  Get it right and the slides will perform well with just the simplest maintenance regime, get it wrong and the slides life expectancy can be severely compromised.

Some of the most important considerations when choosing the right slide are as follows, Loading; Contamination of ball tracks, Dynamics to the application, Temperature and Method of Operation, each of which have their sub-questions our engineering sales team are able to ask.

In terms of Loading our first question is what’s the total mass? Where is the centre of gravity?  Is the application being overloaded, if so we can suggest a stronger slide and likewise if it’s being under-loaded we can suggest a more suitable slide.  We also try and determine ‘Dynamic Loading’, that shortens the lifespan of the slides and which can be caused by loading heavy kit into the application or alternatively shock punishment through performance in harsh environments and difficult terrain.  In this case our range of stronger sides, like our cold drawn steel slides, would be the preferred option.

When it comes to contamination of ball tracks, the main two issues to consider are exposure to ingress particulates and liquid contamination, for example road dirt, sand or water.  To protect against this our ball bearings come in two options, nickel-carbon steel and stainless steel ball bearings that mean extra-strength where needed.

Water temperature is also a main consideration; with our slides being used across a wide range of applications from defence, Fire, Emergency Services, Offshore, through to manufacturing and industry, across a number of different environments.  Design and multiple treatment options mean we have a slide for all conditions, including our new White Zinc Coating, our zinc nickel coating, gaseous nitro-carburising all of which offer increasing levels of protection.  In addition to these options we also offer 3 ranges of material steel, aluminium and stainless steel that cover standard applications through to those exposed to more corrosive environments.

Finally Chambrelan also takes into consideration the method of operation.  Are the slides to be automated or manually operated?  What’s the acceleration and speed of movement and what are the number of cycles the slides have to perform to?  In terms of manufacturing our slides and linear rails confirm to the js13 standard.  The slide is an assembly of profiles, each of them presenting tolerances of 1mm per metre in straightness and 1° per metres in twisting and the maximum speed of use for Chambrelan telescopic slides is 0.3m/s, but again our engineering sales team can help advice in all aspects of the selection process.
